An Erection Onstage? Yep, It’s Allowed By Actors’ Equity

Déa-Julien-David-Anzuelo-Intimacy

While some audiences complain about movies pushing the envelope when it comes to sex and nudity, many forget that the theatre has been living on the edge for centuries. In the new Off-Broadway show Intimacy, actor David Anzuelo talks about where he has to take his role — upright.

In one moment of the play, his character is at his desk looking at porn. When he turns to face the audience after being interrupted by a phone call, he’s got a full-on erection. It’s no Boogie Nights prop, it’s all his and all real.

There are union rules regarding what is allowable onstage. According to Actors’ Equity, erections and nudity are acceptable, but Anzuelo clarified, “You can’t have sex onstage (or) ejaculate.”

The actor is totally up for the part. He shared, “When I read the play, I knew what they were going for. I don’t have any qualms.”

However, it isn’t an easy part. He said, “By the end of the week. I’m tired.”

Intimacy is currently playing at the Acorn Theatre through March 8.
