Interview: Clark Gregg on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ and Only Needing to Know as Much as His Character in “Any Given Scene” (video)

If you don’t already know, Clark Gregg is the best.

Starring as Agent Phil Coulson in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Gregg and his castmates were at Comic-Con doing roundtable interviews with press. The roundtables went long and eventually all of the actors and press had to leave the room. The group at table I was sitting at were waiting (desperately!) to talk with Gregg and even though the PR people were trying to usher us out, he insisted that he at least talk with us for a couple minutes.

I wish we had a hour to chat with him but even in the brief time he sat with us, he gave some great interview.

When asked if he likes to know in advance what’s going to happen to his character, he said that he “can’t act it as well if he knows too much.” He goes on to say that he “needs to know as much as Phil Coulson knows in any given scene.”

He also talks about shooting the show as opposed to appearing in the Marvel movies: “They’re both so damn fun,” he said. “There’s more time to get into the minute details of scenes and story beats in the movies. That said there’s a helter skelter pace to doing the show that’s really fun.” But he does get to go so much deeper into the character on the TV show than in the movies.
