New York theatergoers are undoubtedly excited that Hugh Jackman will be back on Broadway with The River, which begins previews tonight. Even though the Tony Award-winner won’t be singing and dancing in the Jez Butterworth play, Jackman always commands top ticket prices. While most of that has to do with Jackman’s Broadway fame, theatergoers shouldn’t forget that the other main reason why Jackman is such a huge star is because of a certain hairy Canadian superhero that Jackman has played in all seven X-Men films, Wolverine.
Before the first X-Men Jackman was a little-known Australian stage actor and comic book fans initially reacted harshly to Jackman playing the short, rough-tempered mutant. Of course, Jackman is now beloved by fans in the role, and this audition tape — which features Jackman’s first reading with X-Men director Bryan Singer from way back in 1999 — shows why even at the beginning Jackman was an ideal choice for the role. While he doesn’t quite have his Wolverine voice down just yet and he gets a lot of direction from Singer, there’s little doubt that Jackman nails it.
