Watch: Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista’s Audition for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

In this audition clip, you can see that Pratt already had his fast-talking Peter Quill character down and Bautista was equally prepared to play the no-nonsense Drax as Quill tries to convince Drax not to kill Gamora

There were a few major wildcards with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy before it was released. Most of all it featured characters virtually unknown by the general public, including a talking racoon and a ten-foot tree. However, it also starred two relatively untested actors in terms of blockbuster movies: Chris Pratt, then best-known for playing slacker Andy Dwyer on Parks & Recreation, and Dave Bautista, then best-known for being a former pro wrestling world champion. Though time has proved otherwise, it’s understandable why some fans were so skeptical about the film’s chances with those two actors in two of the main roles.

Of course, the filmmakers obviously saw something in them that many fans hadn’t yet seen. Yahoo! Movies has released a clip of Pratt and Bautista auditioning against each other from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two box set. In this audition clip, you can see that Pratt already had his fast-talking Peter Quill character down and Bautista was equally prepared to play the no-nonsense Drax as Quill tries to convince Drax not to kill Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana in the film). After the scene, the two joke around, with Pratt causing Bautista to break character.

After the huge success of Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, both Pratt and Bautista went on to both star in even more successful films in 2015 — Pratt starred in Jurassic World, while Bautista appeared as the villain in Spectre. The two will reunite for 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
