Here’s the last of the Children’s Hospital interviews I did at this year’s Comic-Con.

I talked with Malin Akerman, Lake Bell and Erinn Hayes and I kept this my last because it was incredibly hard to transcribe! The back and forth banter was quick, funny and writing it down just didn’t capture the spontaneity of the interview.

I’d listen to the audio portion if you want to get the full feel of the interview. There was a lot of things I couldn’t include here because most of it would look ridiculous in print.

From talking about having each other’s children, their outrage at Rob Corddry for not inviting them to go to Brazil to film a 10-second-scene and having their characters die and come back to life, the conversation was definitely a highlight.

Children’s Hospital airs on Adult Swim at midnight on Thursdays.

Children’s Hospital is not the kind of show where you go, “What is my arc?”

Lake Bell: None, there’s no logic.

Is that a challenge as an actor or is it more freeing?

Erinn Hayes: It was awesome.  All you have to do is show up and be like, “what am I going to do today?”  You don’t have to think about it or like do a whole lot of prep other than, like, what’s going to make this the funniest for this particular episode.  Read more

Interview: Rob Corddry “I came up doing Shakespeare and drama and now, it’s just not as fun as comedy”

Children’s Hospital is consistently one of the funniest, most absurd shows on television and for that, we have Rob Corddry to thank.

Corddry, who created the show (and also produces, writes and directs) stars as Dr. Blake Downs, a member of the “clown race” who happens to believe in the healing power of laughter instead of actual medicine.

I talked to Rob at Comic-Con on why 15 minutes is the perfect length for the show, how they are planning a stage play of one of the episodes and the demolition of the hospital they use as their set.

Children’s Hospital airs on Midnight, Thursdays on Adult Swim.

Your show is funnier than most shows and you can do so much with your 15 minutes. I guess it’s kind of liberating to be able to do whatever you want every week and not have to adhere to, okay, this character and to this last episode and all that.

Rob Corddry: Well, it’s perfect.  15 minutes is perfect for our format, our sort of relentless show barrage, you know what I mean? And yeah, there are probably some shows out there, some half-hour shows that would be a lot better if they were 15 minutes.

You want to name any of them?

Rob Corddry: [laughs] If I can think of one, sure.  I guess nothing comes to mind but you know, it’s like, I guess you can say that about anything. There are certain shows that probably just don’t, they don’t have the right set, you know what I mean? They don’t have the right this or right that. There are so many factors.  That’s one of them, I think, the form. The actual duration of the show. Read more

Rob Corddry: “I’m like a Roman Caeser”

Rob Corddry - Childrens Hospital - Comic ConI got a chance to talk to Rob Corddry at Comic-Con this year at a roundtable interview and while it was  brief (I think it lasted like 4 minutes!),  it was still very cool to talk to him.

I love his show Children’s Hospital on Adult Swim. He plays ‘Dr. Blake Downs’, the clown doctor who believes in the ‘healing power of laughter’ as opposed to medicine. And if you’ve seen the show, you know that belief always leads to pretty disastrous but funny results.

Rob spoke about the show, being the guy in charge and not kissing Megan Mullally.

For the full interview, click onto the audio link above or download from iTunes.

What’s it like being in charge, does it feel good?

Rob: It’s so good. So good. I just say ‘no’ arbitrarily. I’m like a roman Caesar. “Yes, No, give me some ham.” It’s fantastic.

With the kids in the background, have you guys got any bets on set who can be the worst in front of the kids? To see what they can get away with before the parent steps in?

Rob: No, oh my God no. Oh my God no. Most of the time, I talk a truck driver and I’ve got two young children of my own and I can’t believe they haven’t sworn yet. But no, God, we would feel terrible.

One day this girl was just talking about her dad and how kind of horrible he was like, ‘yeah my dad makes us do this.’ Painting the picture of like this awful father. Any parent that lets their children do something like that is just a bad parent. There’s no argument against that- that kids should be in any way affiliated with this business, especially the show.

Did you get a chance to see Childrens Hospital when it was a webseries? It was hilarious and ridiculous and I loved every minute of it!

Well, it’s now on Adult Swim every Sunday at 10:30 with brand new full length episodes.

I got a chance to talk with producer David Wain and the great Nick Kroll at Comic-Con in a roundtable interview. These two are incredibly funny and if you love comedy, be sure to check out anything these two guys do – especially Childrens Hospital!

The audio portion is a little noisy (there was a bunch of people in the room) but there is more of the interview that I didn’t include here.

How’s it been having a web series go to TV?

David Wain: I think it was just really a great opportunity for–you know, we did these, very short, one-off blasts on the Internet and basically to have the opportunity to make 12… more rounded, full half-hour episodes and just gave us a chance to do a larger scope. More stories, more ideas, tiny bit more budget, and bring in all our talented friends and so many of them, it’s been really fun. Like Nick.

When you guys first did this, did you have any inkling that it was going to get picked up?

David: No, it it was definitely not at all in any way intended as a TV idea. It was just like, this was a fun web series and that it was interesting. And we’re happy to have done it of course.

Nick: I was just a guest star in the show but I was around for some of the filming the first season and second season and the opportunity to work with David and Rob (Corddry) and Jonathan (Stern) who produced this as well, I just think there are a lot of people who are like, “We’ll work with you doing whatever format that you present to us. Because we just wanna be able to work with people we think are funny and to do something on the web was just — it was an opportunity to do wild stuff that isn’t normally allowed on TV. And then I think they proved that it could be funny and sustainable on the web and so when it became a show, they were allowed to continue to do stuff that they might have been inhibited to had it gone straight from a… I don’t know if that’s true or not, but…

David: Yeah. Another thing we’re excited about is the last episode we’re gonna be doing live. We’re gonna be doing it live this fall.
