Sam Rockwell on ‘Moon’, Oscar talk and ‘Iron Man 2′

MTV: You don’t have a lot of actors to play off of — or any actors to play off of — in “Moon.” You knew what you were getting into, obviously, but were there any unexpected challenges? Were you lonely as an actor to not have another person to feed off of?
Rockwell: That’s half the equation. Most of the time, it was hard. There was a young actor there named Robin Chalk, and there was also a body double that looked like him from the back, and a lot of times we were acting with tennis balls, or I’d have to pick a mark or put a piece of tape on the wall or something it was interesting.
MTV: So what’s it like, shooting on the moon?
Rockwell: It’s kinda hot, if you’re in a space station — it’s a moist, a little hot. You want to wear some kind of deodorant or cologne. But the other guys didn’t mind.
MTV: As you well know, there is a movement afoot that you, Mr. Rockwell, will get an Oscar nomination. How did you hear about this, and what was your reaction?
Rockwell: I heard about this — my dad told me about it — that something was cooking on the Internet. So my girlfriend and I looked it up, and it was very flattering. As an actor, this is the only thing you’ve been shooting for your entire career — you don’t care about the actual product [laughs]. You just want awards to put some place. Am I wrong? I would be honored to get an Oscar or anything else like that. But it’s just that anything that gets this movie some attention is a good thing. It’s hard for these smaller films, so anything that gets it attention, for sure.
MTV: Also in the course of this year, a film we haven’t seen yet but you shot already, is a little thing called “Iron Man 2.” Did you study up on your character, Justin Hammer?
Rockwell: I got some research — they sent me over some stuff. I looked it over and that was about it. I kind of took my own ideas from other things. A little bit of Lex Luthor’s stuff — [Kevin] Spacey and [Gene] Hackman. I think there’s a little Bill Murray in “Kingpin” in it. Probably some Richard Gere “American Gigolo” thrown in there. And a little Charles Nelson Reilly!

Terrence Howard talks about being dumped

Since Iron Man 2 started filming today, its kind of fitting that Terrence Howard finally comes out and tells his side of the story on why he was canned in the role of Jim Rhodes.
I think Howard is an incredible actor (have you seen Hustle and Flow?) and hate the fact that he was replaced but…you can never go wrong with Don Cheadle.
We were really looking forward to you continuing in Iron Man 2 and 3. What happened?
Howard: Iron Man happened with that. Marvel happened with it. They made a choice. They made a very, very bad choice. They didn’t keep their word. They didn’t honor our contract. They sent everyone out into a field and told them to work and produce a great bounty. You produce a great bounty, and then when it’s all in the storehouse, you are not allowed into the storehouse.
Does that have anything to do with what went on with Samuel L. Jackson and Nick Fury?
Howard: They did the same thing with Gwyneth [Paltrow], from what I’ve been told. They did it with almost everyone, I think, except Downey throughout the thing. One of the things that actors need to learn to do is take a tip from Friends [whose cast members all held out for higher pay]. You always choose to stick together. One for all and all for one. Our Gang, you know? Let Spanky be our rule.
Does that teach you a lesson about Hollywood politics?
Howard: Yeah, make sure your Ts are crossed twice.
Aren’t you dangerous to them now, since you know the plans for the trilogy?
Howard: Nah, when someone does something wrong, you don’t have to get them back. Everything right will return the favor for you.
Will you be eagerly awaiting Iron Man 2 in theaters?
Howard: Yeah, I’m definitely looking forward to it. I want to see what happens with that. I want to see Don Cheadle become me. I want him to do better than me. That’s what I really want to see. I think he can. Don Cheadle is the reason I got on Crash. He was one of the producers on Crash, and he called and got me in there. So it’s like Don is good by me, anything he does. He’s given me the greatest gift I could ever imagine having. Don gave me that, so anything I have, I’ll share with him.

Robert Downey has finally come out and said something about the whole Terrance Howard/Don Cheadle Iron Man deal. Though it wasn’t much:
“I had nothing to do with that decision. I love Terrence very very much. That’s all I’ll say because I havert n’t talked to him yet.”

Insiders believe the exit stems from Terrence Howard’s difficult behavior on the set of Iron Man. But those with intimate knowledge of the situation suggest a far more dramatic backstory: Howard was the first actor signed to the film and, on top of that, was the highest-paid.

First Robert Downey gets screwed by Paramount by dumping his ‘Soloist’ to next year, now reports are that Terrance Howard is getting screwed by Marvel. Apparently he had already agree to a contract with the studio when they reneged on the deal. We’re crossing our fingers nothing happens to Gwyneth Paltrow. Click here for the article.
