Though Peter Jackson‘s movie adaptations of The Hobbit haven’t received the same critical acclaim as his films based on the book’s sequel, The Lord of the Rings (turning a 300 page book into 9+ hours of film tends to do that), fans are still eagerly anticipating the release of the final part of The Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. One of the reasons for that is the portrayal of the dragon Smaug, who is voiced by master elocutioner Benedict Cumberbatch.

However, Cumberbatch did not just voice Smaug, but he also provided motion capture for the character — which is especially interesting because Smaug is a winged dragon that is hundreds of feet long. Because of that, this b-roll footage from the shooting of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (which is available on Blu-ray today) of Cumberbatch filming the motion capture for Smaug is fantastic. It’s only a brief clip (which you can check out above), but you can expect to see more of Cumberbatch’s Smaug in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which is out in theaters on December 17.
