A diary created by the late actor Heath Ledger is part of a new German documentary that details the Academy Award winner’s life, Time reports. Kim Ledger, the actor’s father, looks back at his son’s successful career in Too Young To Die, revealing a diary Keith used to prep for one of his biggest roles, the Joker in Christopher Nolan‘s 2008 film The Dark Knight.

The diary included pictures, playing cards, scenes from Batman comics, and photos of actor Alex DeLearge from the film A Clockwork Orange. According to Ledger’s father, his son also spent time alone to get ready for his role as the Joker.

“He pretty well locked himself up in a hotel, in his apartment, for a month or so, to sort of galvanize the upcoming character in his own mind,” Kim shared. “That was typical of Heath on any movie. He would certainly immerse himself in the upcoming character. I think this was just a whole new level.”

Ledger passed away in January 2008 at the age of just 28-years-old.
