Broadway’s ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ Fires One Cat While Another Demands Private Driver

With the Broadway adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany's receiving less-than-stellar reviews, it makes sense that the aspects people are talking about most are star Emilia Clarke's brief on-stage nudity and the cats.

When we last updated you on the cats in the show — who have proven to be much harder to train than Broadway’s much more popular animal, dogs — one cat, Montie, who did not follow his stage directions, was being upstaged by the easier to work with cat Vito Vincent.  Soon it was decided that Vito would act as lead cat and Montie would be his understudy.  But by the time the show opened on Wednesday, Montie was handed his walking papers and Vito assumed the role of Holly Golightly’s unnamed pet.  However, because Montie is owned by Babette Corelli, who trained the cats for the production, he will continue to live at the theater through the play’s run.  Rick Miramontez, the publicist for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, released a statement saying, “Cats do have nine lives. While there are others who are joining the production as understudies and covers, Montie will remain at the theater indefinitely.”

Meanwhile, the new lead cat — or, more accurately, his owner — is beginning to throw his weight around.  Vito’s owner is now reportedly negotiating for a private car and driver every night, with a representative of the show saying, “We will not comment on specific requests, [but] the producers have made every effort to treat Vito like the star that he is. The production is saddened by Montie’s dismissal and wishes him well.”

At the same time, another cat, Moo, has been recruited as Vito’s understudy.  It doesn’t seem like Moo will get a car though.
