Knightley “Wanted to Do Something Else” Beyond “Pirates”

The 26-year-old Knightley said that while working on Pirates’ ship “was an amazing experience,” she “just wanted to do something else.”

While Johnny Depp seems excited to film more films for Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, former female lead Kiera Knightley is nowhere to be found in its fourth installment, On Stranger Tides.

Speaking to USA Today recently, the 26-year-old Knightley said that while working on Pirates’ ship “was an amazing experience,” she “just wanted to do something else.”

“I was 17 when I started and 22 by the time the last one came out. It was a considerable chunk of time… Doing it solidly for two years at that time definitely enough,” said Knightley, referring to the demanding year-round schedule for the franchise’s second and third films, 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest and the following year’s At World’s End.

Since the last Pirates movie, Knightley’s certainly kept busy, appearing in 2008’s The Duchess and 2010’s Never Let Me Go and Last Night. She’s also set to star alongside Viggo Mortenson in the upcoming A Dangerous Method, which chronicles the relationship between psychologists Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.

Knightley isn’t following the rest of the cast to Stranger Tides, but she’s not jumping off the plank completely. She’ll still head down to her local movie theater (okay, maybe her home theater) and see what’s up with Jack Sparrow and company. “I can’t wait to see (the movie). I’m sure it will be lovely.”
