Jeff Who Lives at Home star Jason Segel appears to be have come to terms with his career as an actor, the flashing bulbs of Tinseltown, and everything else that comes along with the territory.
Talking with the L.A. Times, who also stars in CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, is clear on who he is. “What I’m good at is just being really regular”, but he hopes he’ll “fall on the creepy side” one day, grabbing a role outside the realm of the usual characters he inhabits.
And while Segel want’s to play a creep he isn’t planning to in real life. “Everyone’s waiting for the moment where I turn into a [jerk], and it’s not gonna happen. In my 20s, all the characters I played were stunted because I became so scared to even allow myself a pat on the back. Acknowledging my success felt arrogant. But it’s all right to be a confident, self-assured man. I’m growing into that.”
Segel never took official classes in the performing arts, he just plays off of his own instincts. “I always felt like the goal was just to be really calm. I’m not trying too hard. I just don’t come in with an intent to knock their socks off with this thing.” Adding, “I don’t need to fill something out about what my character is like. What do they have in their wallet? That just feels dumb to me. I’m sorry.” It’s simple, “happy words, happy face. Sad words, sad face. There is the trick to acting, kids. Do a face that matches the words that you’re saying. But, hey, I have no Academy Awards, so listen, maybe I’m wrong.”
It just seems to come natural for the star who was discovered at the age of seventeen years old by a scout while performing Zoo Story from Edward Albee.
