Josh Hutcherson’s Spider-Man Audition

This is what happens when you really want a part.

Apparently, Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right, Journey To The Center Of The Earth) spent his own money to create this audition video for the re-boot of Spider-Man. He got a fight choreographer and did his own stunts even. This got the attention of Sony and the director, Marc Webb… which put him the running for the part.

Cool, huh?

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd attempt to plug ‘Dinner For Schmucks’

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd are out plugging their new film, Dinner for Schmucks. I love Paul Rudd and think the movie looks pretty funny.

The video is 10 minutes long but I thought it was hilarious. Rudd pretty much takes over the interview showing off his French accent, his face dancing skills and has a on-going joke with his water glass (you’ll just have to watch).

Inception comes out today and I can’t say enough good things about this film. The performances are wonderful, the script is smart, special effects are awesome and Christopher Nolan can do no wrong.

How’s that for a plug?

Here are two videos with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page answering questions that were submitted from movie-goers. Most of it’s ‘fluff” but there are a couple things in there I think you’ll find interesting.

Perseverance As An Actor

Here’s a good (although long – almost 2 hours!) video about perseverance as an actor.

David Ackert (The Ackert Advisory) starts off with some info on how to exactly do that. Then at the 56:50 mark, Eric Souliere (UDK), Jaime Ferrar (JFA Agency) come in and give their view of things. What’s the best way to get in front of an agent, whats the best way to be more effective at booking and tons more info.

I’ve met Eric a couple of times and he’s direct and will tell it like it is, so he’s a great person to take advice from.

From Improv to Stand-up: The Business Of Comedy

The SAG Foundation had a panel on the business of comedy a couple of weeks ago.

On the panelist was Oscar Nuñez (The Office), Bruce Smith (Omnipop Talent Group), David Goldman (Comedy Time Network), stand-up comic/casting director Lesley Wolff and casting associate/stand-up comic Chris Gehrt.

They talked about why improv training is important, the reality of open mic nights and the importance of writing.

Incidentally, I took a class from Lesley Wolff once and it was such a great experience. It was a 5-week course and where the final night, you did a 5 minute stand-up routine at the Improv. If you get a chance, I highly recommend it!

John C. Reilly talks about on-set improvisation

Breaking Bad Audition Tapes

Breaking Bad is one of the best shows on TV. The writing and acting are fantastic and you never really know where the show is going to take you.

Check out these audition tapes from some of the stars of the show; Aaron Paul, Dean Norris, Anna Gunn and Betsy Brandt. From the looks of it, Dean Norris had the character down from the first audition.

A Day On The Set Of Modern Family

Modern Family is one of the best shows on TV, so much so that I”m even watching the re-runs.

Grown Ups comes out today. The film stars former Saturday Night Live greats Adam Sandler, Chris Rock (ok, he wasn’t so great on the show), David Spade and Rob Schneider along side Kevin James.

In the video below (after the jump) the cast talks about what is was like working together, coming up with the jokes and more.

My quick review: What do you get when you make a movie with a bunch of comedians and give them no real script? Stupidity. But guess what? I really enjoyed it.

Is the movie idiotic? Yes. Is there a real plot? No. Is the movie filled with stereotypes? Yes.

But I couldn’t help but laugh.

Casey Affleck on how he chooses a role and what makes a killer tick

Casey Affleck is starring in The Killer Inside Me where he plays a small-town sheriff’s Deputy. Oh, and he a psychopathic killer.

He tells USA Today that he was attracted to the script “because it was a really interesting portrait of a very extreme person. The violence and sex were never sensationalistic. He’s a sad, violent, unhappy person. I felt for him.”

The director, Michael Winterbottom wanted Affleck from the very beginning. He says that Affleck “has a gift to convey that something else is going on in his head that he’s not showing you. He has a great sense of timing and he’s interesting. I don’t know if it’s technique or if it’s who he is. The days he had to be violent, those were the difficult days for him. You felt that Casey found it quite hard to get into Lou those days.”

Knight And Day’s Peter Sarsgaard on Tom Cruise

Knight and Day, starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, opens today.

My 3 sentence review: It’s not going to win any awards but this is a great summer movie. Light and breezy, it kept me totally entertained throughout it’s 109 minutes. It’s good to see Tom Cruise in this mode and he and Cameron Diaz have great chemistry together.

The film also stars Peter Sarsgaard as Cruise’s former CIA partner. He’s great in the film, as he always is. Here’s a bit of video where he talks about working with Tom Cruise.

A Conversation With Acting Coach, Larry Moss

Larry Moss is probably one of the most famous acting coaches around right now. He’s worked with actors Hillary Swank, Helen Hunt, Leonardo Dicaprio, Michael Clarke Duncan, Hank Azaria, Jim Carrey, Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Garner and David Duchovny. Pretty good client list, right?

Here’s what Leonardo DiCaprio has to say about him:

Watch as Fred Armisen jumps on the stage and adjusts his wig seconds before they cut to him. Watching this made me kinda frantic. I wanted to yell “Hurry!”
