Katharine McPhee Talks ‘Smash’: “In this part I get to live the best of both worlds. I get to play a character who wants to live on stage”

katharine-mcphee-smashKatharine McPhee has had a rough start to her career after placing second on American Idol in 2007.  She was dropped from her record label only a year after being introduced to the public, and had only previously appeared in supporting roles in movies like The House Bunny and Shark Night

But all of that is about to change—McPhee is starring in a breakout role in NBC’s Smash, set to premiere tonight.

The actress will play a young performer fighting to be cast as Marilyn Monroe in a Broadway production.  The type of show fits perfectly into McPhee’s wheelhouse as a former musical theater student.

In an interview with Reuters, McPhee said, “I have intentionally not pursued musical theater.  I toyed with the idea of doing some stage but over the years, there wasn’t the right projects for me… In this part I get to live the best of both worlds.  I get to play a character who wants to live on stage.  It is pretty rare.  If someone had told me five years ago you will get to be on a show where you get to do it all, I’d have said, ‘You are crazy!  It’s not going to happen.’”  Read more

Homeland’s David Harewood Urges Black British Actors to Head to the States for Better Roles

As far as British actor David Harewood is concerned, there’s no point for young British actors to stay in the U.K. when they could be trying to make a name for themselves in America.

“I would encourage, particularly young, black actors, to get to America or to at least try and have that ambition in your back pocket,” the 46-year-old said while promoting the British premiere of hit Showtime series Homeland. “They do seem to embrace a more diverse palette, and I think that’s sad but that’s just a fact. I would encourage people to get there as quickly as they can.”

Harewood recalled a conversation he once had with Idris Elba, a black British actor who was about to get his first break, thanks to HBO drama The Wire. “I can remember talking to Idris years ago about these frustrations and he told me ‘I’m going to America,’ and I kind of thought, ‘What are you doing that for?’” he said. “Look at him now. He’s a huge star.”  Read more

Rashida Jones on Being Recognized as “Actor/Writer/Producer”: “It Was the Best Moment of My Life”

rashida-jones-celeste-and-jesse-foreverFans of NBC’s Thursday night comedies are used to seeing Rashida Jones’ name in the credits of Parks & Recreation and The Office, but until recently, the actress had never been associated with writing scripts.

Indie comedy Celeste and Jesse Forever, the movie Jones co-wrote and produced with ex-boyfriend Will McCormack, debuted at Utah’s Sundance Film Festival last week.

“I just took a picture of my badge, which says ‘Actor/Writer/Producer,’” the 35-year-old, who also stars in the new film, told New York Magazine. “It was the best moment of my life. So good. So good.”

She should get used to that feeling. Even though they’re no longer a pair, Jones and McCormack have several other writing projects currently in the pipeline. For now, though, Jones is excited about having pulled double duty for Celeste and Jesse, which follows two exes and their attempts to keep their friendship alive.  Read more

Matthew Broderick Explains Why He Made Honda’s Ferris Bueller-themed Super Bowl Commercial

matthew-broderick-ferrisBy now it’s no secret that Honda is airing a commercial during Sunday’s Super Bowl with Matthew Broderick portraying a very Ferris Bueller-like day off from his busy movie career.

But what convinced Broderick to take a nostalgia trip back to his 1986 career-making, cult-favorite role from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off?

As he explains to New York Magazine, “It took a little, uh, thinking about it, it took a little time, but I ended up thinking it might be amusing.”   Another reason for participating was that the two-and-a-half minute commercial was directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover films), and Broderick adds, “Todd Phillips was directing it, who’s a good director, and I thought it would be fun to send up Ferris Bueller a little bit.”  Read more

Even After 20 Years, ‘Law & Order’ Still Keeping New York Stage Actors Employed

Law-and-Order-SVUWhile a police procedural show like Law & Order (and its many spinoffs) has a core cast, the nature of the show often requires dozens of guest stars per episode as victims, suspects, witnesses, and villains.

Luckily the original Law & Order (which ran from 1990 – 2010), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001-2011), Law & Order: Trial By Jury (2005-2006), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (which is currently in its thirteenth season) are set and primarily produced in New York City, and a large number of guest stars have been cultivated from New York’s rich theater scene.  Open up any Playbill from a New York stage production and you’ll likely see at least one cast member with Law & Order experience… or perhaps most of them!

In fact, executive producer Warren Leight believes that casting New York theater actors has managed to set the series apart from similar shows.  He explains, “One of the reasons Law & Order has lasted is the quality of its acting and it’s a type of acting different than in L.A.  Theater actors will do the same investment (in their characters) they do when doing a play — build a back story … wonder about motivation. … I know when they get there, they will come in with ideas.”  Read more

Josh Radnor Talks ‘How I Met Your Mother’, Sitcom Scheduling and His First Movie Role

Though best known at the moment as the actor on How I Met Your Mother who isn’t Jason Segal or Neil Patrick Harris (and I mean no slight by that), Josh Radnor has also directed (the 2010 Sundance film happythankyoumoreplease) and starred in films, including this year’s Sundance movie Liberal Arts, which he also wrote and directed.

In an interview with Moviefone, Radnor talks about how sitcom scheduling allows him plenty of time for film projects and memories of his first movie role.

Radnor explains that while How I Met Your Mother might end soon, he has gotten very used to the sitcom filming schedule.  “We’re only contracted for one additional season after this season. And that would take us to eight… It’s a weird thing. Because I’ve kind of orientated the last seven years around being on the show. I know mid-August we start, we end early April. We have three weeks on, one week off every month. Two weeks for Thanksgiving. Three weeks for Christmas — you know what I mean? I kinda know the drill. And it put me on a schedule that I actually find really appealing. So I know how to budget my time and I know how much time I have to make a movie, if I can do that. I can travel. The ‘ups’ are a lot bigger than the ‘downs’ on this thing. But it has to be a full-cast decision. We all have to be on board.”  Read more

Watch: Matthew Broderick’s Ferris Bueller-esque Super Bowl Commercial

Matthew-Broderick-Ferris-BuellerHonda has released it’s Ferris Bueller-esque Super Bowl commercial 7-days early.

In the commercial, Matthew Broderick plays himself as he skips out on a day of acting work, spending the day living it up as his Bueller character would have done.

In the Todd Phillip‘s directed  spot, there’s a bunch of references to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off  like Yellow’s ‘Oh, Yeah’, his car getting stolen and crashing another parade.

I wonder if this could spurn a sequel? Let’s hope!
