Most actors would do just about anything to have their picture plastered all over New York City subways, since thousands of people see your image every day.

But Los Angeles actor Cleo Barry, who is featured in advertisements all over New York, isn’t happy. For one thing, his head is cut out of the ad. For another, the ad has literally cut off his leg — it’s an advertisement for eating healthy, with Barry’s missing leg said to be a result of Type 2 Diabetes. But Barry has both of his legs, and he doesn’t suffer from diabetes. Yet the ad is all over New York City subways (I just saw it yesterday).

Barry was paid $500 to pose for some pictures in Manhattan several years ago, and as part of the deal agreed to let the photos be used by a stock photo agency and gave permission for the photos to be altered. So legally there isn’t an issue that the photo is being used, and hence Barry’s right leg came off and a pair of crutches were added in the background to drive home the fact that drinking too much sugary soda can lead to Type 2 Diabetes.

Barry wasn’t happy when a friend altered him of the advertisements. He says, “I was beyond shocked. I cried at my computer screen for, like, a minute.” While he supports the advertisement’s goal of getting people to change their dietary habits, Barry doesn’t understand why someone who is actually suffering from the disease wasn’t used instead. He points out, “You are New York City, for God’s sake. Give it to us the right way or we won’t believe you at all.”

Representatives of the New York City Health Department defended the ad, so Barry — who has appeared in the touring production of Seussical the Musical and has appeared in low-budget films like 200 M.P.H. and Zombie Apocalypse — has resigned himself to his only course of action: revenge. He’s looking for a soda company to hire him, “so we can do a commercial, I’ll sing and dance for them and I won’t charge an arm and a leg.”

SAG and AFTRA released the merger documents which go into detail all the specifics of the proposed merging of the unions.

Last night, SAG and AFTRA released the merger documents which go into detail all the specifics of the proposed merging of the unions.

The full printed merger documents will be mailed to each voter with the ballot, which will need to be returned before March 30th.

There will also be a new joint website to provide members all the information they’ll want to consider before voting. The website will include complete merger details, FAQs, and a comprehensive calendar of events to alert members nationwide to meetings and other opportunities for learning about the plan. They’ll be giving that link to us soon.

Most of the details have already been released (here and here). It’ll be harder to join the union, be less expensive than joining both and Pension and Health will merge.

I won’t pretend to say that I read each of the docs, which total 117 pages, but if you’re so inclined, they are listed below.

For the full documents, click below:
Merger Agreement
SAG-AFTRA Constitution
P&H/H&R Feasibility Report

New details of the potential SAG and AFTRA merger, including initiation fees, yearly base dues and AFTRA not budging on it's 'open-door' policy.

Deadline is reporting some new details of the potential SAG and AFTRA merger, including initiation fees, yearly base dues and AFTRA not budging on it’s ‘open-door’ policy.

The new initiation fee for the combined union will be $3,000. Currently, AFTRA’s fee is $1,600 with SAG at $2,230.

The base dues – what you pay if you don’t work at all or only make the minimum amount – will be $198, or $99 every 6 months most likely.

The worst part of the merger is that AFTRA will not remove it’s ‘open-door’ policy until the merger is complete. They write:

“Which means that from now until the effective date, anyone with $1,600 can walk up to the AFTRA cashier and join. Meaning they won’t have to pay the difference between $1,600 and post-merger $3,000. “This potential flood of newbies will absolutely kill the background community,” one of my sources says.

So, if you’re not in the Union and you want to be, grab that spare $1,600 you have lying around your house an head to your local AFTRA office.

Head on over to Deadline for more of the details.

A survey conducted by the actors union, Equity, revealed that only 57% of gay actors felt they could be open to their agents about their sexuality. A third of those surveyed admitted they had experienced homophobia, with 57% of it coming from other performers.

While 81% said they had come out in the professional lives, over 94% said they are open about their sexuality to other performers. However, the process of revealing their sexuality is still an emotionally difficult challenge. Because of the way the theater industry functions, actors are constantly surrounded by new people, thus increasing the number of times they have to come out to people they don’t know.

However, the survey, reported by The Guardian, does address the difficulties gay actors face when dealing with their agents and casting directors. One actor interviewed by The Stage said, “A previous agent of mine once told me to keep quiet about my sexuality and though I am out, I do not broadcast it.” More than half of the gay actors surveyed said they ‘feared being offered only stereotypical roles if they came out, while being denied romantic leads in particular.’ One actor said, “It’s okay for a straight actor to play gay roles but harder, if not impossible, the other way around.”

When actor Rupert Everett spoke with The Observer last January, he stated that he regretted coming out. He said, “For an actor to be working (at all) is a kind of miracle, because most actors aren’t. So it’s just silly for a working actor to say, ‘Oh, I don’t care if anybody knows I’m gay’—especially if you’re a leading man.”

The Equity equalities officer, Max Beckmann, still believes the survey’s results to be generally positive, since most actors stated they would encourage others in the industry to be open about their sexuality.

With a book by Douglas Carter Beane and music and lyrics by Lewis Flinn, Lysistrata Jones, based on Aristophanes Greek comedy, follows the awful Athens University basketball team who haven’t won a game in years. When Lysistrata jones transfers to the school, she joins the cheerleading squad and then challenges the girls to stop “giving it up” to their player boyfriends till they win a game.

Go see this show now!

Because it’ll probably be closing very soon.

The show was originally staged last summer in a church gym in downtown New York. It had great reviews and was quickly scheduled to move to the Walter Kerr Theatre where it opened on December 14th. But, in the move uptown, it lost its magic. The show doesn’t have the most challenging of stories but with a musical comedy, you don’t need a hugely complicated plot. You just need it to be fun, entertaining and filled with a winning cast.

None of which this show has and unfortunately I blame some of the cast.

There are genuinely funny moments and catchy songs but the cast just didn’t sell it. With the exception of the absolutely wonderful Patti Murin, as Lysistrata, most of the cast boggled my mind on how they ended up on a Broadway stage. At times, I felt like I was watching a bad, yet eager, high school production. Particularly head-scratching were some of the male cast members; they were singing off-key, not hitting jokes and just plain awful acting. The cast came with the transfer and maybe because they’ve done it so long now they are just bored with it because that’s what I was… bored.

But, at least with Murin front and center, the audience has something to latch on to. Whenever she’s on stage, her tiny body suddenly becomes 12 feet high and you can’t take your eyes off of her. Sure, she’s a knockout but her performance was everything you want it to be in a show like this: fun, spunky and bursting with personality.

Lysistrata Jones is currently playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre. But catch it quick because it may not be there too much longer.

The nominations for the 18th Annual SAG Awards were announced this morning while I was patiently sitting in an airport waiting to board my flight to JFK.

Congrats to all the nominees!

But, I just have one WTF as I go through the list: Glee was nominated as in the Ensemble category? The cast is fine with Jane Lynch, Heather Morris and Matthew Morrison being the standouts but nominating the cast for best ensemble? Seriously?

Check out the nominations below!

According to the Talent Agencies Act (which is a California law), actors are only allowed to gain work through licensed talent agents. Managers on the other hand, are only allowed to provide advice generally on a client’s career.

It seems like this law would be hard to enforce, but there have been cases where talent will make claims of TAA infractions to get out of paying manager commissions.

Rick Siegel, former manager of Rosa Blasi, fought a case that went all the way to the California Supreme Court in 2008; however, the court did not overturn the TAA or its penalties. Siegel also lost an appeal made against his lawyers for failing to argue what he felt were key points in the case. Now he’s back again, but this time he’s receiving the support of countless managers. A full list of the managers has been posted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Clinton Ford Billups Jr., President of NCOPM (National Conference of Personal Managers), argues that, “California’s Labor Commissioner and courts have erroneously applied the TAA to personal managers in an unfair and disproportionate fashion. It has resulted in forfeitures of fairly earned contractual fees legitimately earned in commercial commerce.”

It would be great to hear the response of actors to the current appeal. If Siegel won, it would certainly change the relationship between actors and their managers. However, THR reports that Siegel is representing himself, and he may be hard-pressed to win a case already upheld by the CA Supreme Court.

Well, here’s some bad news to anyone (including me) who frequents the Studio City location of Samuel French.

The company announced on it’s Facebook page that on February 20th, they will close that location and merge it with the Hollywood store.

What’s strange was they way they put it:

A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!

SAMUEL FRENCH, THEATRE and FILM BOOKSHOP IS ON THE MOVE!!

Samuel French will be COMBINING it’s two stores, making our HOLLYWOOD LOCATION your MAIN theatre and film RESOURCE.

On FEBRUARY 20, 2012, our STUDIO CITY Bookshop will JOIN FORCES with our HOLLYWOOD STORE to create an ALL-IN-ONE Sunset Boulevard location where you can CONTINUE to find LA’s LARGEST SELECTION OF PLAYS as well as all your theatre, film, and television resource needs.

Weird, right? It sounds like they’re trying to make it seem like closing a store a good thing.

I love the Studio City store… mostly because it’s a pain for me to get to the Hollywood location.

The only problem of course with both fans and filmmakers is that the actors have to be right for the part. Casting is already a difficult process but it must be even harden when you’re dealing with finding the person that can live up to fan expectations.

Just watching Winter’s Bone (2010) showed just how powerful Jennifer Lawrence is as an actress. She’s definitely the right choice to play Katniss Everdeen; however, casting the two young actors that will form a love triangle with Katniss must have been an even greater challenge.

Josh Hutcherson will play the part of Peeta Mellark, the boy chosen along with Katniss to compete in a tournament – to the death (hence the film’s title).

In an interview with MTV News, Hutcherson reveals that he was almost tormented by how “right” he felt for the part. “It kind of drove me crazy in a way, because I felt like I was so right for it, then I had to go through this crazy audition process,” he said. “So to finally be making the movie and now we’re finished, it’s like, somebody please pinch me, because I still don’t believe this is actually happening. For me, it’s just an honor to be a part of such a great story. Gary Ross is such an amazing director, and Jennifer Lawrence is perfect, and everyone else we cast was really great.” He says that when reading The Hunger Games he was amazed by how true Peeta’s character was to him: “I had never read a character that was more like who I am as a person and had kind of my core values and what I believe in.”

Despite having appeared in a number of films already, Hutcherson was rather anxious waiting to find out if he had been cast for the part: “For the audition process, I came in the first time and read a few scenes for Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and some of the other producers involved. Then maybe about a week or so, maybe two weeks later, I came in and did a screen test with Jennifer, where I actually read the scenes with her so they could see how the chemistry worked. Both of them felt really great, but as an actor, you just pick apart every single thing that you do, so for me, I was on pins and needles waiting to find out. And then when I finally found out, my jaw hit the floor. I was so excited.”

If Hutcherson was the right choice for both the director and the author, fans of the book should be extremely excited and do their best to control their anticipation as they await the release of the film in 2012.

Samuel French, the oldest and largest publisher of plays and musicals, announced this week that they will start to sell both plays and musicals in the popular eBook format.

Well, this is cool. Samuel French, the oldest and largest publisher of plays and musicals, announced this week that they will start to sell both plays and musicals in the popular eBook format.

Which means if you have a Kindle, Nook, iPad, iPhone or even your trusty old laptop, you’ll be able to read them.

They are on sale now and most of the plays will sell for $8.99. I just checked the site and it’s only available via iTunes and Apple products which leaves us Android owners out of luck but French plans to roll out their program in all eReader formats and titles will be available for sale from all major e-retailers by the end of 2012.

2012?! Dag. Anyway, no matter how long the wait, I think this is a great idea. One, because I’m lazy and having to drive to the Samuel French store or ordering it and waiting for it to arrive is a pain. Two, because when I want something, I’d like to have it right then and there.

The company is hoping that that by launching this new program, they will not only satisfy instant access demands from customers, but help broaden play readership and further expose the work of their authors.

Ken Dingledine, Director of Publications and Operations comments, “Being able to deliver an author’s content in an additional format will only enhance the reach of the creator’s work. We are witnessing a new generation of actors embracing technology in new ways we never could have imagined. We feel Samuel French has a responsibility to make our authors’ work accessible to this and future generations.”

Search the iBookstore below. I’ll be honest, I did and didn’t find much but keep checking back as I’m sure this will become popular.

Update: Kelly Christopher told me via our Facebook page that she just bought a play earlier today and that you can highlight, bookmark and even add notes to the eBook. “You can even take words from the play and look them up in the dictionary and search within the play, Google or Wikipedia using the highlighted word!,” she writes.

Thanks Kelly!

The Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA just issued a joint press release about the lawsuit brought on by the actress suing IMDb and Amazon for displaying her age on the widely used site.

The Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA just issued a joint press release about the lawsuit brought on by the actress suing IMDb and Amazon for displaying her age on the widely used site.

“Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA Deplore Age Discrimination Facilitated by IMDb.com and Similar Online Databases,” they wrote in their headline.

They follow it up by adding: “An actor’s actual age is irrelevant to casting. What matters is the age range that an actor can portray. For the entire history of professional acting, this has been true but that reality has been upended by the development of IMDb as an industry standard used in casting offices across America.”

Go SAG, go!

“IMDb publishes the actual dates of birth of thousands of actors without their consent, most of them not celebrities but rank-and-file actors whose names are unknown to the general public. When their actual ages then become known to casting personnel, the 10+ year age range that many of them can portray suddenly shrinks, and so do their opportunities to work.”

“Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strongly believe that businesses like IMDb have a moral and legal obligation not to facilitate age discrimination in employment. Entertainment industry employers who would never directly ask a potential employee’s age routinely access that information through IMDb and its professional subscription site IMDbPro. IMDb has the power to remove the temptation for employers to engage in age discrimination by accessing this information.”

Go ahead AFTRA. Give the final blow.

“We are disappointed that IMDb has rejected the efforts of Screen Actors Guild, AFTRA and other entertainment industry unions, and workers to work together to reach a solution to this problem. It is time for IMDb to step up and take responsibility for the harm it has caused, and to take appropriate measures to protect entertainment industry workers, including actors, from losing jobs for the enhancement of IMDb’s financial statements.”

I swear, I don’t understand the big deal. Why is IMDb refusing to remove this feature? It’s a simple html fix and Boom! It’s gone forever.

I wonder with the lawsuit and this new pressure from the Unions if they’ll finally relent and take it away.

What’s weird for me is that my age isn’t listed on the site. I’m not sure how that happened but I’m glad that no one can figure out my true age of 57.

An unnamed actress is suing Amazon, the owner of the second most popular movie website on the web (after Daily Actor, of course... right?) the Internet Movie Database for $1 million.

Huh. I guess you really can look up anything on the Internet, including the age of someone who specifically doesn’t want their age to be discovered.

An unnamed actress is suing Amazon, the owner of the second most popular movie website on the web (after Daily Actor, of course… right?) the Internet Movie Database for $1 million.

Why? Her true age is listed on the website. And as any actress will tell you, ageism is definitely an issue in Hollywood. Face it: can you name ten actresses who work regularly (and by regularly I mean “more than one movie per year”) that are over the age of 45? How about 50? 60? It seems that male actors get a bit of a leeway — heck, I have no qualms about seeing Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in action roles even though both of them are over sixty. I can’t say I’d be as interested in seeing a sixty year old woman in something similar (although Helen Mirren was awesome in Red). We’ve seen actors play leading roles well into their seventies — for actresses, well, that’s simply not an as common opportunity. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The woman, who is said to be of Asian descent, says in the complaint filed in federal court in Seattle that she signed up for the pro version of Internet Movie Database in 2008. Soon thereafter, she noticed that the legal date of her birth was listed on her public profile. The plaintiff believes that the site was able to obtain her information because in signing up to IMDb Pro, she was required to give detailed personal and credit card information.”

The complaint filled in court goes on to state, “If one is perceived to be ‘over-the-hill,’ i.e. approaching 40, it is nearly impossible for an up-and-coming actress, such as the Plaintiff, to get work as she is thought to have less of an ‘upside’ therefore casting directors, producers, directors, agents/managers, etc. do not give her the same opportunities, regardless of her appearance and talent.” She claims to have asked the website to remove her age numerous times, but her request has not been fulfilled.

There’s definitely two sides to this argument; after all, age-shaving is a tried-and-true practice in the acting industry. Then again, shaving off a few years won’t really help you if you don’t actually look that age (I mean, how many actors in their late twenties are playing teenagers on weekly teen dramas?), and talent always rises to the top regardless of age. Then again, do you consider your birth year “private information”?

Let us know what you think, readers! What are your thoughts on the lawsuit?

Howard and Aquino Re-Elected President, Secretary-Treasurer

Los Angeles (September 22, 2011) — Screen Actors Guild today announced the results of elections for its top two elected positions and National Board. Ken Howard has been re-elected for a second term as Screen Actors Guild president, and Amy Aquino will continue in her role as secretary-treasurer. Both will serve two-year terms, beginning September 25.

Ballots for the national officers election were mailed to 100,994 paid-up SAG members on August 23, and 23,459 were tabulated today, for a return of 23.23 percent. Howard received 17,492 votes, with David Hillberg getting 3,047 votes, Sharon Rubin receiving 1,681 votes and Asmar Muhammad receiving 855 votes. Aquino ran unopposed and received 20,399 votes.

“There’s nothing more important than members exercising their right to vote, and I’m very grateful for their continued support,” said Howard. “With so many pro-merger candidates elected again this year, there’s no doubt what members want, and I look forward to presenting a comprehensive plan to the SAG and AFTRA national boards in January.” “Two years ago, SAG members definitively set the Guild on the road to merger, and this election confirms they want it more than ever,” Aquino said. “I’ll continue working to strengthen SAG’s operations and finances, and I’m honored to be able to help my fellow performers achieve the crucial goal of creating one union.”

A working actor for more than 40 years, Howard has an extensive resume that includes work on television, movies and the stage, including the upcoming Clint Eastwood biopic J. Edgar. An Emmy and Tony Award winner, he helped create and starred in The White Shadow from 1978 – 1982, and has had recurring roles on 30 Rock, Dynasty, Melrose Place and Crossing Jordan. He is the author of the book Act Natural, and serves as the chancellor of the National Kidney Foundation.

Aquino’s career in acting spans more than two decades. She has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including Moonstruck, Law & Order, Castle, Monk, ER, CSI and Everybody Loves Raymond just to name a few. She also has an extensive career in theater, and holds a master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama.

Screen Actors Guild also announced election results for the National Board of Directors. Approximately one third of the 69 national board seats were open for election this year, representing Screen Actors Guild’s Hollywood, New York and Regional Branch divisions.

Screen Actors Guild National Executive Director David White welcomed new members, as well as those who were re-elected.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to President Howard, Secretary-Treasurer Aquino and all of the new and returning members of the Screen Actors Guild National Board of Directors,” he said. “I look forward to working with the officers and board members during such an exciting period in the Guild’s life. We have a lot of terrific work ahead of us.”

SAG’s Hollywood Division elected 12 National Board members; the New York Division elected five National Board members; and seven National Board members were elected from the union’s branches in Boston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Detroit, Houston, Nashville, Nevada and Washington-Baltimore.

The following were elected to serve as National Board alternates and to the Hollywood Division Board of Directors (one-year terms): Valerie Harper, Ellen Crawford, Esai Morales, Stacey Travis, John Carroll Lynch, Lisa Vidal, Christine Lakin, Michael O’Neill, Mandy Steckelberg, Tara Radcliffe, Michelle Allsopp, Bob Bergen, Assaf Cohen, Jon Huertas, Sarayu Rao, Allen Lulu, Woody Schultz, Donal Logue, Patrick Fabian, Iqbal Theba, Bertila Damas and Parvesh Cheena.

Additionally, New York Division members re-elected Mike Hodge for a two-year term as New York Division president. Hodge received 3,185 votes with Sam Robards receiving 2,276 votes.

The following were elected to serve as National Board alternates and to the New York Division Board of Directors (one-year terms): Traci Godfrey, Mark Blum, Marc Baron, John Rothman, Kevin Scullin, Dave Bachman, Matt Servitto, Phoebe Jonas and Manny Alfaro.

Worth), Ed Kelly (Detroit), Robert Nelson (Houston), Cece DuBois (Nashville), Art Lynch (Nevada) and Stephen F. Schmidt (Washington-Baltimore).

Ballots for all eligible SAG members in Hollywood and New York were mailed on August 23 with a September 22 return deadline and were tabulated today by the independent election company Integrity Voting Systems. A total of 10,621 ballots were tabulated in the Hollywood Division (representing 19.37 percent of ballots mailed in the Hollywood Division) and 5,739 ballots were tabulated in the New York Division (representing 25.11 percent of ballots mailed in the New York Division). The number of ballots returned in the Regional Branch elections varied by region.

Someone stole the Slither actress’ identity, but in a recent sit down with Esquire she shares how her Role Models director and friend, David Wain, managed to regain her Twitter handle after a run in with the emotional thief.

“I accidentally got on Twitter because there was a fake Elizabeth Banks, twittering, and David Wain, who’s the director of Role Models and a good friend of mine, was staying at my house in L.A., twittering. I didn’t know anything about Twitter at the time, but he was following me, thinking it was me. And this person tweeted, “Hanging out by my pool! Just chilling on Saturday!” And David Wain was actually hanging out by my pool, on Saturday, and I wasn’t there. I was in New York or something. And so he was like, “Huh, I don’t think you’re Elizabeth Banks.” And this person broke down, and said, “No I’m not Elizabeth Banks. I started this because I’m a fan and now I have all these followers and I don’t know what to do.” David called me and said, “Do you want me to broker the password away from this guy and get your identity back on Twitter?” And he did! So, yeah: I got Twitter identity theft.” While talking on the topic of identities, funny sex scenes, and more, Banks also dished that actress loves “the finality of film. When you make a movie, you know the beginning, middle, and end. Television, one week you think you’re a single child from Alabama, and then they throw in your secret brother, your half-sister, your drunk mom. Like, on 30 Rock, who knew I was gonna end up married to Kim Jong-un?”

Up next Banks can be seen in another new family comedy, Welcome to People. The actress stars as Frankie in the Alex Kurtzman production that follows a man who must meet his sister for the first time while delivering her $150k from their dead father. The 2012 flick also stars House’s Olivia Wilde and Chris Pine.

The gigs typically pay well (Weill Cornell Medical College in New York’s Upper East Side pays $25 per hour) and offer actors a unique opportunity to portray various symptoms.

Classic sitcom Seinfeld is already credited with popularizing phrases like “Spongeworthy” and “Not that there’s anything wrong with that,” and now you can add yet another to its laundry list of cultural contributions.

A 1998 episode found Michael Richards’ Kramer taking a hospital acting gig as a gonorrhea patient, and now, according to The Wall Street Journal, more and more medical centers have begun hiring actors to portray patients and, in the process, help train medical students.

“Forget waiting on tables or doing menial jobs. These days, to support themselves between gigs, or simply keep plying their craft, actors are auditioning at hospitals and medical schools to portray sick people — ‘standardized patients’ in med school terms—who help aspiring doctors learn their craft” reports WSJ’s Lucette Lagnado. While the practice existed before Seinfeld brought it into the mainstream, its current prevalence can be chalked up to 2004 ruling that made student interaction with fake patients a requirement. The gigs typically pay well (Weill Cornell Medical College in New York’s Upper East Side pays $25 per hour) and offer actors a unique opportunity to portray various symptoms. “I have done heart attacks, lupus, diabetes, Parkinson’s, hot flashes,” says New York City actress Denise Lock. “At least you’re acting on some level.”

Part of the reason why actors are sought to simulate a patient’s medical issues is safety. Dr. Yoon Kang, director of Weill Cornell Medical College’s Margaret and Ian Smith Clinical Skills Center, says that “In simulated environments, students can practice and make mistakes—no one is going to get hurt.” In fact, the whole process is more question-and-answer based rather than any actual medical procedures – after all, the whole idea of the simulation is to have the students correctly diagnose the patient’s problems before suggesting possible cures.

Just like any acting gig, however, playing a patient can have its drawbacks. Actor Kevin Orr explains, “They will poke you—and they will keep poking you. My record is being poked seven times. I want to tell them to stop.” Of course, sometimes the actors take the part too seriously: Dr. Kang believes that overacting by the patients is often intimidating. He says, “We want stars but we need to temper their star quality. We don’t want the Laurence Oliviers to take too much dramatic license.” Dr. Kang recalls an instance when an actor playing an elderly patient took the role too literally, bringing a cane along and swung it all around like a cranky curmudgeon.

But success can be had. Neal Mayer, who has frequently worked with Dr. Kang’s students, has appeared on stage in Broadway, off-Broadway, and national tours. Still, he can recall the most awkward moment he’s had as a “patient”: as Lagnado writes, “Mr. Mayer says a first-year medical student once asked if he was pregnant. When he reminded her he was a man, she simply repeated the question.”

That certainly wasn’t a question that Kramer had to face!
