‘Memphis and ‘Anything Goes’ Set Closing Dates

Hock-a-done.

It was announced today that both Memphis, the 2010 Tony Award Winner for Best Musical, and Anything Goes, the 2011 Tony Award Winner for Best Revival of a Musical, would soon be closing their stage doors.

The more shocking of the two closing is Memphis, at least for me. I thought this had a little more legs. The show will play its final performance on Sunday, August 5, 2012 after 30 previews and 1,166 regular performances. It opened on October 19, 2009 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre, having begun previews on September 23rd.

Memphis won four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score (David Bryan and Joe DiPietro), Best Book (Joe DiPietro), and Best Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters).

It  currently stars Tony Nominee Adam Pascal (Huey) and Tony Nominee Montego Glover (Felicia) with Derrick Baskin (Gator), J. Bernard Calloway (Delray), James Monroe Iglehart (Bobby), John Jellison (Mr. Simmons), and Nancy Opel (Mama).

MEMPHIS launched its successful multi-city U. S. national tour in Memphis, TN, which opened to critical acclaim on October 16, 2011 at the historic Orpheum Theatre.  It has been playing to packed houses ever since and recently announced its second year.  For more information on the tour, visit www.MemphistheMusical.com.  Planning is underway for a West End production of MEMPHIS.  More details will be announced soon.

The producers behind the hit revival Anything Goes said today that the final two weeks of performances began today. Originally to run through August 5th, the Tony Award winning musical must end on Sunday, July 8th.

The original limited engagement subscription run opened on April 7, 2011 and was scheduled to run for 19 weeks.  It went on to be extended three times through July 8, 2012 and recently celebrated its 500th performance on Broadway.  This acclaimed production marks the second longest Broadway run in Roundabout’s history, following its beloved revival of Cabaret

The show won three 2011 Tony® Awards including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Choreography (Kathleen Marshall); five Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Choreographer of a Musical (Kathleen Marshall); four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Choreographer of a Musical (Kathleen Marshall) and the Drama League Award for Distinguished Revival of a Musical.

The production currently stars Stephanie J. Block as “Reno Sweeney” and Tony and Academy® Award winner Joel Grey as “Moonface Martin.”

Still haven’t seen these shows? Don’t worry because Memphis is currently on tour and Anything Goes starts theirs this coming October.
