John Stamos: “I’d Rather Someone Say I’m Funny as Opposed to Better-Looking”

Over the course of his three-decade career, actor John Stamos has made a name for himself appearing in hit television series like Full House and ER. However, he’s also appeared in his share of Broadway shows, and the 47-year-old recently chatted about his favorite theater and TV roles and his responsibilities as an actor with BroadwayWorld.com.

He called playing The Emcee in hit Broadway play Cabaret “hands down so far the highlight of my career. It was the perfect time of my life, the perfect show for me at that time. I was trying to get away from the Uncle Jesse character. I remember scaring the shit out of people that were coming to see Uncle Jesse because it was not long after I had finished Full House.”

Full House, which ran on ABC from 1987 to 1995, found Stamos playing the lovable uncle role, while The Emcee was a much creepier, more unconventional character.

As for his favorite TV role, Stamos chose a very early soap opera appearance. “I would have to say I love Blackie, the first character I ever played, on General Hospital,” he said. “Over the two years of being on a soap opera, you get to play every emotion on the planet and with twenty to thirty takes a day… It was my first job and a very exciting time for me. I loved playing him.” “I like to make people happy,” Stamos explained, talking about his duty as an entertainer. “I’d rather someone say I’m funny as opposed to better-looking and make them laugh rather than cry. I’m fascinated by comedy…. It’s much harder to do comedy than drama. It’s almost mathematical with all the rhythms.”
