michelle-williamsOscar-nominated star Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn) will make her Broadway debut starring as Sally Bowles in the Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of Cabaret, which will open in early 2014.

She will replace Emma Stone in the role, who was set to make her own Broadway debut with the production (Stone dropped out because of her film commitments).

If that isn’t enough of a draw, Williams will be joined by Alan Cumming as the M.C. Cumming was awarded a Tony for his portrayal of the character during the last Broadway revival in 1998.  If that’s not enough of a blast from the past, the production will be directed by Sam Mendes and co-directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall, who served in the same roles for the 1998 revival.

They must have done something right because in addition to Cumming’s Tony Award the revival won three others, including Best Revival of a Musical.  The 1998 production went on to eventually become the third longest-running revival in Broadway musical history before closing in 2006. Natasha Richardson starred as Sally for the first six months of that production, and the lengthy list of replacements included Jennifer Jason Leigh, Susan Egan, Gina Gershon, Joely Fisher, Brooke Shields, Mary McCormack, Lea Thompson, and, believe it or not, Debbie Gibson and Molly Ringwald.
