Find Out How Oscar Isaac’s First Audition Led Him to Getting Cast in ‘Ex Machina’

Oscar Isaac proves that a unsuccessful audition doesn't mean a dead end

Oscar Isaac has been on a bit of a roll lately — he had a major role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, now the most successful film in U.S. box office history and also stars in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse — but it took several years for Isaac to make a splash in the acting world. However, Isaac is proof that a unsuccessful audition doesn’t mean a dead end.

In this interview with Isaac and Ex Machina director Alex Garland from Collider, Isaac reveals that his first audition after graduating drama school was for 2007’s Sunshine, a film that was written by Garland. Though Isaac didn’t get that role, years later Garland thought that Isaac would be a good choice for the lead in Ex Machina, which was Garland’s directorial debut.

Though the clip goes into more detail about the making of the film, the main takeaway for actors is this: you might not be right for one part, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be a better fit for another part in something else made by the same people. So conduct yourself professionally as you try to nail every audition — the future version of you might end up grateful to you for it!
