Gillian Jacobs made a splash with Britta, the neurotic and often times a pain-in-the-butt character she played in Community. She’s now moved on to Judd Apatow‘s new Netflix series, Love and she recently sat down with The New York Times to talk about the show, moving to Los Angeles and her audition for Community.

“I remember making this tiny independent film in the dark woods of New York State and thinking, the moment this thing wraps I am getting on a plane and flying to Los Angeles for pilot season,” she said of the instant she knew she had to head west. “Pilot season was almost over, but I knew I had to try it.”

She then talked about her audition for Community, saying that she sat in a room full of women who had blowouts and full faces of makeup, and just decided I didn’t really care anymore. And I guess that is what Dan liked about me.”

Looking back, she is grateful for her break in comedy. “I had never done television when I walked onto set to film the pilot. I felt this huge freedom and permission to get weirder. No one in that cast ever judged one another for going big. It’s where I learned to undo what Julliard had taught me.”

On her new show, Love, she told the paper that “It’s not your usual rom-com.” The characters “both have a lot of anger under the surface, a lot of frustration. I find that when you date someone who is messier on the surface, you feel like, oh, I’m the good one. That’s just like, easier. But if you look deeper, we all have things we need to address.”

‘Love’ is now streaming on Netflix.
