Ed O’Neill: “I don’t think (Jane Lynch) should have gotten the Emmy”

“I love Jane, honestly I do," he said. "I’m dying to star in one of Christopher Guest’s movies alongside her, but I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. (Sue Sylvester) is just a one-note character.”

Actor Ed O'Neill

Ed O’Neill, who plays Jay Pritchett on one of my favorite shows, Modern Family, held court to a group of international reporters and one of his comments is causing a slight bit of commotion.

TVGuide.ca reports that he told the group that Jane Lynch didn’t deserve to win a Best Actress Emmy for her role on Fox’s Glee.

“I love Jane, honestly I do,” he said. “I’m dying to star in one of Christopher Guest’s movies alongside her, but I don’t think she should have gotten the Emmy for that part. (Sue Sylvester) is just a one-note character.”

Who did he think deserved the statue? His Modern Family wife, Sofia Vergara. “Sofia is just so, so funny. I don’t think people realize how hilarious she is. She’s so sharp with her wit, it’s amazing.”

He also said that he wasn’t looking for another sitcom when the shows creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd asked him about the role. “Then I read the script, and I said to myself, ‘Oh God, this is so good.’ I put the script down and came back and read it a second time and thought, ‘I have to do this.’”

But they had already asked Craig T. Nelson to do the part. As fate would have it though, Nelson dropped out to join NBC‘s Parenthood.
