Danny DeVito Demonstrates How He Eats a Hard Boiled Egg on Stage in Broadway’s ‘The Price’

DeVito reveals his onstage egg-eating technique and talks about performing for a Broadway audience.

It’s hard to believe that Danny DeVito is making his Broadway debut in Arthur Miller’s The Price after so many years as an actor — and being originally from right across the Hudson River in New Jersey, no less. While it might have been a long wait, critics say it’s worth it — DeVito has received near-universal praise for his standout performance as eccentric antiques dealer Gregory Solomon, and has been nominated for both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for the role. Yet his most impressive feat on stage at the American Airlines Theatre isn’t anything he says or how he delivers it, it’s a key scene in which Solomon ingests a hard boiled egg in the middle of a scene of dialogue — and continues the scene, spewing bits off egg throughout.

It’s something that’s great fun for the audience, but a bit challenging for DeVito. Speaking in a video for the New York Times, DeVito reveals his onstage egg-eating technique and talks about performing for a Broadway audience. He says, “It’s fun every night. It’s different every night. When you’re up there it’s like skiing. It’s like going down the mountain.”
