Watch: Conversations with Will Smith on ‘Concussion’ and the Research That He Did for His Role

Smith speaks in-depth on his preparation for the role, including the amount of research that he did to play Dr. Omalu

One of the numerous controversies centered around this year’s Academy Awards nominations was whether or not Will Smith deserved a nomination for portraying Dr. Bennet Omalu, the neuropathologist who has done research on the brains of football players, in Concussion. While some felt Smith was snubbed, others pointed out that aside from a Golden Globe nomination Smith did not receive any nominations for other major awards and the film itself received only average reviews from credits.  Regardless, the role marked a significant challenge for Smith. Viewers can determine the quality of Smith’s performance themselves now that Concussion is available on DVD and Blu-ray.

In this conversation presented by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation moderated by Jenelle Riley of Variety, Smith speaks in-depth on his preparation for the role, including the amount of research that he did to play Dr. Omalu.
