It’s hard to see Steve Carell as goofy Michael Scott or dimwitted Brick Tamland when you watch him in Foxcatcher, in which he plays real-life millionaire — and oddly, Olympic wrestling enthusiast — John du Pont. Also starring in a transformative performance is Mark Ruffalo, who plays Olympic gold medalist wrestler Dave Schultz. Channing Tatum also stars as Dave’s younger brother — and fellow gold medalist — Mark Schultz, whom du Pont takes under his wing.

In the above clip, director Bennett Miller narrates a sequence from the film that features Carell, Ruffalo, and Tatum. There is a lot of conflict in the scene, but it’s all under the surface. Miller explains how the actors’ performances depict “a scene where what’s happening never actually is made explicit.” Even out of context with the film, which opens on November 14, one can see what the three actors bring to their role just through body language.
