Sir Ben Kingsley Talks about the Unique Way He Voiced His Character in the Animated Film, ‘The Boxtrolls’ (video)

I could listen to Sir Ben Kingsley talk about acting and.. well, I could listen to him talk about anything. He’s starring in the new Laika stop-motion animated film, The Boxtrolls, and he and some of the cast (along with the director) joined in on a Comic-Con panel about the film.

The Boxtrolls is about a young orphaned boy (voiced by Game of ThronesIsaac Hempstead Wright) raised by underground cave-dwelling trash collectors who tries to save his friends from Snatcher (Kingsley), an evil exterminator. The film also stars the voices of Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Toni Colette, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan.

In the video, he talks about how he loved voicing the character and how “liberating” it was.

Another interesting thing was the way he actually recorded the role. He did it lying down because he wanted the voice to come from his belly.

And here’s an acting tip: He likes to find the little crack of vulnerability in a character and he then builds on that.

Some more highlights:

  • How he came up with the voice of his character
  • How he wants to do more comedy

The Boxtrolls will be released September 26th
