An Acting School That Gets Students in Front of the Camera

NYFA

As anyone who’s ever attended an acting school can tell you, the traditional approach is heavily focused on stage acting. However, for many students who don’t aspire to win Tony awards, learning how to act on stage is only the foundation of the skills they hope to acquire in acting school.

Few traditional schools have the resources to train actors in film and television acting, let alone even more recent digital mediums. While there are plenty of well-known acting schools that have launched the careers of thousands of notable actors, one acting school that offers students opportunities to explore acting in a variety of media is the New York Film Academy.

The NYFA has two acting schools, one in New York City located at its Manhattan location in the former Tammany Hall building (which also houses the Union Square Theatre) and another in Los Angeles on the backlot of Universal Studios.

The school’s acting programs — which include MFA, BFA, and AFA programs and shorter-term workshops — are in addition to its extensive programs in film and television production (including film directing, film producing, screenwriting, cinematography, film editing, and documentary filmmaking). With such extensive programs in production, acting students who attend NYFA get plenty of experience in front of cameras and have extensive opportunities to learn the production side of filmmaking in addition to honing their craft as actors. Students attending the School of Acting is Los Angeles also have the opportunity to work on the Universal backlot.

Of course, those attending the school in New York have access to the many opportunities that New York City offers actors. Because of the production-orientated nature of much of the school’s programs, NYFA acting students also have many chances to collaborate with production students on projects, including material that could make up a student’s acting reel.

Unsurprisingly, the NYFA still offers courses in stage acting, yet that represents just one aspect of the education offered to students at the NYFA School of Acting.
