NBC Picks Up Four New Pilots: Three Comedies and ‘Inception’ Styled Drama

NBC has announced it will be picking up four new pilots – an Inception styled drama, two romantic comedies and an untitled project from one of the producers behind Parks and Recreation.
The psychological thriller REM comes from the creator of Lone Star, Kyle Killen. Compared to the Leonardo DiCaprio’s film Inception, the drama centers around a police detective who wakes up to alternate realities after surviving a horrifying car wreck.
From Party Down co-creator John Enbom, Free Agents is a single-camera, cast contingent comedy about two quirky publicists working at a Hollywood talent agency. Similar in style to The Office, the show is based on the British comedy with the same name.
Family Guy writer Chris Sheridan brings the new comedy LoveLives to the network. It’s described as a sophisticated multi-camera comedy about two couples who struggle with infidelity.
Parks and Recreation producer Dan Goor is behind NBC’s final pilot, an untitled comedy about a young doctor who joins his parents’ medical practice and has to balance his time between patients and his family. Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun will executive produce the pilot with Goor.
How “Bad” Acting Lands An Oscar Nomination

Just how did an acclaimed, stage-trained, Oscar-winning actor like Geoffrey Rush approach the scenes in “The King’s Speech” in which his character proves to be a mediocre thespian? With genuine anxiety.
“Clever Mr. Tom Hooper shot that scene on the very first day,” Rush told PopcornBiz at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival of the moments when speech therapist Lionel Logue reveals that, despite youthful dabbling in the theater, he’s anything but an accomplished actor. “He made me get up in front of an entire English crew and some other English actors who all knew that I had some sort of reputation for being a Shakespearean actor in Australia. But I’d always played prose characters – I was never the verse speaker. So I was nervous and I was bad, and he just shot it.”
The actor goes on to say how thrilling it is to see Mr. Logue receive recognition for his accomplishments, as seen by the results at Google: “If you had Googled Lionel Logue two months ago you would’ve had no hits. Now you might get a couple of thousand.”

Kevin McKidd on his directorial debut: “I’m in my late 30s and I love acting, but I wanted to shake things up a bit”

Kevin McKidd is perhaps best known for his work as an actor, having starred in the HBO series “Rome” and filled out the casts of “Trainspotting,” “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” and other films. But the 37-year-old Scotsman is ready to switch things up. Tonight, in addition to starring as Dr. Owen Hunt on ABC’s drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” McKidd will also be credited as the episode’s director — his first time behind the camera.
“I found out I was directing four days before they were to start shooting and had to go into prep right away,” recalls McKidd. “The show costs X millions of dollars to make each episode, so I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me.”
“I’m in my late 30s and I love acting, but I wanted to shake things up a bit in my career. I had a hunch that my personality type would lend itself to directing and to be able to communicate to a crew. I’ve got the right temperament for dealing with a lot of pressure”.
Although McKidd enjoyed his first time working behind the camera, he maintains acting is his first love.

Q&A: Fairly Legal’s Michael Trucco “The most important thing in developing my craft was learning the stage”

If you’re a fan of Battlestar Galactica, you know Michael Trucco from his role as Cylon Samuel Anders. Now, he’s a million miles away from that part and in a new USA series called, Fairly Legal.
In the show, he plays San Francisco Assistant District Attorney Justin Patrick, the ex- husband of the show’s main character played by Sarah Shahi.
Michael participated in a conference call where he talked about how he got started in acting, doing theater and how he approached his role in the show.
For the full interview, click the audio link above or download from iTunes
Fairly Legal airs Thursdays at 10/9c
How did you got involved with the show and what drew you to the character?
Michael Trucco: I guess the process was a little over a year ago. I had just finished completing work on Battlestar Galactica. You know, that series came to an end. I was looking for work and for another show and to get into another project. I liked the idea of Fairly Legal being 180° turnaround. That’s the complete departure from the tone of a show like Battlestar Galactica and that was attractive to me.
I think it’s important for an actor to look for diversity in their roles and I like the idea of playing a human being, for one. I like the tone of the show, the light-hearted, the dramady so to speak and the character interests me. I’m a son of a police officer, and so the aspect of law and prosecution interests me greatly.

The Syfy Channel has given us their take on the BBC’s Being Human. The show centers on a werewolf, vampire and ghost living together in the same house attempting to be… human.
As you can guess, they’re not always successful. But that’s the fun of the show.

I talked to stars Sam Huntington (the werewolf) and Meaghan Rath (the ghost) along with excutive producers, Jeremy Clarke and Anna Fricke on a conference call about the show, their not human characters and and how the actors got their parts.
For the full interview, click the audio link above or download from iTunes
Being Human airs on SyFy at 9/8c
How did all of you get involved in working on the show?
Sam Huntington: It’s a very traditional audition process coming in meeting the casting people and the executive producers including Jeremy and Anna and our other exec and the director of the first few episodes, Adam Kane. And then you progress along and you eventually end up testing for all the fine people at Syfy and then just kind of get the gig.
Meaghan Rath: I actually auditioned first in Montreal, that’s where I’m from.
Anna Fricke: We saw you on tape. We did, that’s how magical you are.
Meaghan Rath: Yes, so I went in with a casting director in Montreal and auditioned a couple of times there and then I met with Adam Kane, our Executive Producer and Director, and then I was flown to LA to screen test and I met with the guys and we all read together and fell in love and lived happily ever after.
