Tom Felton on fame, auditioning and the end of Harry Potter

tom-feltonTom Felton grew up on the set of Harry Potter, playing the role of evil Draco Malfoy. I don’t really know much about him except that I love to hate his character.

He talked to the U.K.’s Daily Mail in a great in-depth interview. Some of the highlights are below but one thing that interested me (which I didn’t include) is his seemingly frosty relationship with Emma Watson. “She is very professional and seems like an intelligent lady,” he says. Kinda odd to say that… they’ve been working together for the better part of 10 years, right?

Anyway, here he talks about being famous, having to audition again and working with the very best actors that Britain has to offer.

On the series coming to an end:
“I feel a real mixture of emotions. There is a little bit of sadness, but at the same time there is excitement. For the past decade we haven’t had much freedom to do other projects. I certainly haven’t had much freedom to keep my own hair colour, or lay in the sun, or do anything remotely dangerous like skiing. It was nice to go on holiday and not have to slap on the SPF50 and sit under an umbrella with three caps on.”

On being famous:
“One thing that people keep on saying to me is that the wealth and the fame must have made up for missing out on my childhood. But the idea of money — putting a price on your childhood — is ridiculous. You will never get those years back and you can’t put a price on them. And to me, fame is not a positive thing. The idea of being famous is a lot better than the reality. It’s fantastic when you go to premieres and people cheer you, but it’s not real. And it’s totally not my approach to get my name on a club door just because I can.”

Laurie Holden and Emma BellLaurie Holden and Emma Bell are starring in AMC’s The Walking Dead, so all you zombies out there had better step up your game; they’re ready to kick your butt.

Emma’s most recently been seen in the film Frozen while Laurie was a regular on The Sheild and frequently works with series producer Frank Darabont.

I talked to them in a roundtable interview at Comic-Con where they talked about the cast, their characters and sweaty working conditions!

Tell us about your characters.

Emma Bell: Well, Amy is–she’s a college-age girl and she was going back to college on a road trip with her sister when this apolscypse happened. And they somehow get out of it and this very nice man, named Dale, picks them up and takes them to this camp where they start surviving.

Amy isn’t in the comic…

Emma: No, I should be dead right now.

Laurie Holden: Well, I think in the comic book she has like one line. [LAUGHTER]

Emma: One line and it’s, “I gotta pee.” [LAUGHTER] It was funny. Thankfully, they’ve really been–Frank and all the crew–have been really great about giving Amy a significant part in this. But you know, every time I get that script, I’m like, “I don’t know, I might die in this one.”

Gale Anne HurdProducer Gale Anne Hurd has left her mark on some of the best action films of the past 20 years; the Terminator series, Armageddon, both Hulk movies and so much more.

She’s now leaving that mark and helping to slay some zombies on the fantastic new AMC show, The Walking Dead.

I talked to her in a round-table interview at Comic-Con about casting the show, the incredible behind the scenes talent and yes, Zombies!

For the full interview, click onto the audio link above or download from iTunes.

How do you feel about the fan reaction so far?

Gale: We’re thrilled, absolutely thrilled.

I actually heard a fan just to the left of the panel say this show may be able to cure cancer, which I thought was great.

Gale: That’s a little too much pressure. But the zombie apocalypse I think cures cancer, you don’t have to worry about that anymore.

Frank [Darabont] talked about how he plans to veer off of the text. What is the process for coming up with ways that you’re going to do that?

Gale: It was a really fast process because honestly, we pitched it in October to AMC. November we got a green light to go to script. February we got a green light to go to the pilot. March I think we got a green light to go to six episodes.

But throughout the entire process, Frank and Robert and myself to a lesser extent, essentially have been discussing what makes the best TV series adaptation of the comic book.  You only get so many little bubbles of dialogue in description in a comic book so we get to delve a lot deeper.

So in the first season, we don’t get as far as a lot of fans on websites have thought we did because we’re able to explore. And it’s a big cast. It’s a very big cast. So, we’re really able to focus on the great cast that we’ve got and dig deeper than Rob and Dave could do in the comic book.

And also have new characters that don’t appear in the comic book.

What Robert said to us was, he is all for potentially killing off people who don’t meet their demise so soon in the comic book and allowing in the comic book who are killed within a couple of issues to live longer. And it really is all about an overall arc, which is a different kind of arc than in a comic book.

Where can you get the most drama from the situation, from the characters that we have? And that’s first and foremost what Frank, Robert and the rest of the writers have been focused on.
