Morning Reactions from Emmy Nominees

jim-parsons“I’ll just say ‘Bazinga!’ ” lead comedy actor nominee Jim Parsons said of his second nomination for his role as master geek Sheldon Cooper on CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory.” Parsons, who was up walking his dog when he heard the news this year as opposed to announcing the nominations at the TV Academy, said he hoped he’d be less nervous his second time around. “I was there last year, which was a weird experience. The first time you do anything is kind of jarring, but if there’s a difference this time, I hope that I’ll feel a little more relaxed, but I do have a lot of nervous energy running through me.” As for what comes next for his asexual character, Parsons expects the writers to extend Sheldon’s relationship with Mayim Bialik. “I look forward to seeing what they do because it won’t be ordinary and it’s nothing I can dream up,” he said. “If this relationship extends, it won’t be a typical second, third date. It will be very fun to play.”

Matthew-Morrison-GleeMatthew Morrison couldn’t sleep and opted to go for a 10-mile run in New York ahead of the announcement that saw “Glee” score 19 nominations, including his for lead actor in a comedy series. “I want to say this stuff doesn’t matter to me right now, but I can’t wipe the smile off my face.” The show’s success with Emmy voters will “only feed the monster”: “I’m going to get humbled with bad hair jokes,” Morrison said in a nod to fellow nominee and on-screen rival Jane Lynch. “I think the fact that it is in the comedy category is great but it’s so much more than that. It’s a show about the underdog and I’m so happy the underdog is kicking ass right now.” Asked what song he’d opt to sing to commemorate the nominations, it was a no-brainer: the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Got a Feeling.” To celebrate, Morrison will spend the day in the studio recording his solo album but hoped to fit in a late dinner with friends.

When Kyra Sedgwick heard the news of her fifth nomination for lead actress in a drama series for TNT’s “The Closer,” the actress says was in a far from glamorous situation, “I had poop in my hand!” Sedgwick, who was walking her dog when she heard the news, says she “never expected” a nom again this year. The “grateful” nominee has two reasons to celebrate today, “it’s (husband) Kevin’s (Bacon) birthday today. He’s in Canada and when I spoke to him I forgot to wish him a happy birthday. I’m such a bad wife! I called him right back though.” Next up for Sedgwick is indie drama “Chlorine” with Vincent D’Onfrio. The actress also promises an eventful sixth season of her hit show, “we know drama here at TNT.”

Tina Fey had an announcement this morning following both her lead actress in a comedy series nom and comedy series nom for NBC’s “30 Rock.” “This seems like an appropriate time for me to announce to NBC that I will not be renewing my contract,” the seven-time Emmy winner joked in a statement, “with my gym.” On a short-lived serious note, Fey says that the cast and crew are “grateful” for their fourth straight nomination, adding that today is “the fifth anniversary of the day NBC forgot to cancel us.”

Aaron Paul was groggy with the best of the L.A. crowd Thursday morning, but mostly because of late-night movie viewing. “I am so tired from staying up to watch ‘Taxi Driver,’ ” said Paul. “What can I say? I love dark movies and zoning out to Scorsese’s genius.” Paul, who is said he planned to “drink a Sierra Nevada and go back to bed” to celebrate his Emmy nom, is humbled by his second nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “Breaking Bad.” “It’s huge. Just a huge stepping stone for me to be listed among these actors,” he said, adding how grateful he is to be able to work with such rich, dark material on his show. “Vince (Gilligan) is the kindest man you’ll ever meet, and he comes up with some amazing dark shit!”

“Modern Family’s” Eric Stonestreet, a first-time nominee, was trying his hardest to stay asleep when he got the call from his best friend. As a working actor for 14 years, he didn’t forsee this type of recognition for his work; the actor was just happy to be steadily working. Though the majority of the ensemble cast for the ABC comedy was well-represented in the supporting categories, there was one obvious omission. “We’re bummed that Ed [O'Neill] didn’t get nominated,” Stonestreet said. “He doesn’t think of himself as a lead guy, but if he thought of himself [as such], maybe he would’ve been recognized.”

Julianna Margulies, nominated for her dramatic turn as Alicia Florrick on “The Good Wife” and an Emmy winner as supporting actress for “ER,” wasn’t aware the Emmy nominations were taking place this morning. Her husband, who was getting ready for work, reminded her and they turned on the TV just in time for her category to be announced. “I’m thrilled that the show and this character has been embraced,” Margulies shared. It’s great that “a new network show has resonated with so many people.” With nine nominations, Margulies plans to celebrate with her castmates — many of whom were nominated — this weekend before shooting begins next week for Season 2. As for what’s coming next on the series, Margulies has no clue what’s in store. “I have a fitting today, but I haven’t seen the script,” she said. “They probably did that so I didn’t have to lie!”
